Gene Hunters Target Child Kidney Failure
Researchers are zeroing in on the genetic abnormalities predisposing to vesicoureteric reflux (VUR), one of the most common causes of urinary tract infections and kidney failure in children, reports a study in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). "In this study, we accomplished a very critical step towards the identification of the VUR gene," says Ali G. Gharavi, MD (Columbia University, New York).

Bausch & Lomb, a world leader in eye health, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Besivance(TM) (besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension) 0.6% for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as "pink eye." Besivance(TM) is a new topical ophthalmic antibacterial, administered via sterile ophthalmic drops, that treats a wide range of eye pathogens including those that most commonly cause bacterial conjunctivitis.(4) Bacterial conjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular conditions worldwide.(2)

Watson Pharmaceuticals Receives FDA Approval For Generic PLAN B(R)

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE: WPI), a leading specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories, Inc., has received approval today from the United States Food and Drug Administration on its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for levonorgestrel tablets, 0.75 mg, for women seventeen years and younger. Levonorgestrel is the generic equivalent to Duramed Pharmaceuticals" PLAN B(R), which is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy following unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. This product is approved for prescription use only. The Company intends to market the product under the trade name Next Choice(TM) and plans to launch the product shortly. For the 12-months ending March 2009, PLAN B(R) had total U.S. sales of approximately $123 million, of which approximately ten percent are attributable to prescription sales, according to IMS sales data.
