New Study Pinpoints Difference In The Way Children With Autism Learn New Behaviors
Researchers from the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have collaborated to uncover important new insights into the neurological basis of autism. Their new study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, examined patterns of movement as children with autism and typically developing children learned to control a novel tool. The findings suggest that children with autism appear to learn new actions differently than do typically developing children. As compared to their typically developing peers, children with autism relied much more on their own internal sense of body position (proprioception), rather than visual information coming from the external world to learn new patterns of movement. Furthermore, researchers found that the greater the reliance on proprioception, the greater the child"s impairment in social skills, motor skills and imitation.

Baptist Conference Addresses HIV/AIDS In Black Community
Fear, religious beliefs and cultural differences are among the reasons why blacks do not get tested for HIV, participants of the National Baptist Convention USA"s annual Congress of Christian Education conference being held in Detroit, said on Monday, the Detroit Free Press reports. As part of the five-day conference, religious leaders discussed ways to address the high rates of HIV and AIDS among the black community. Participants also said that concerns of racism by medical professionals may be a reason why blacks do not get tested. Simone Phillips of the St. Louis chapter of the American Red Cross said, "A lot of people are leery" in the black community and "we [need] to get rid of the stigma" surrounding HIV/AIDS (Warikoo, Detroit Free Press, 6/23).

Smokefree Innotec, Inc. Addresses FDA Concerns About Electronic Cigarettes

Smokefree Innotec, Inc. (Pink Sheets: SFIO) issued a statement referring to articles in USA Today and The New York Times of Wednesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 23rd, regarding the FDA taking aim at electronic cigarettes. The national dailies stated that tests show that certain e-cigarettes contain "known carcinogens and toxic chemicals," including diethylene-glycol (an ingredient used in antifreeze, printing ink, brake fluid and glue) and nitrosamine (which is used in rubber products, the tobacco industry, and - less concentrated - in beer and fish-products). Thomas Schroepfer, President of Smokefree Innotec, stated, "The Company"s electronic cigarette was not among those tested and is completely different from those tested as we do not use any kind of transponder substance. We have received confirmations from industry s with knowledge of our product design and manufacturing process that no carcinogens or toxic chemicals capable of polluting our product are used in the manufacturing process and that the design of our product ensures a lower consumption level of nicotine, while still providing satisfaction to the consumer."
