California-Based Desert AIDS Project To Hold Retreat Targeting Hispanics Living With HIV/AIDS
The Palm Springs, Calif.-based Desert AIDS Project next week will hold a health and wellness retreat targeting Hispanics living with HIV/AIDS, the Desert Sun reports. The program, called Grupo Latino, will provide individual and group activities -- such as depression and anxiety workshops, yoga and meditation -- for HIV-positive people. The program aims to help HIV-positive Hispanics and their families combat stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. In addition, DAP provides health care and social services for HIV-positive people. An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 people in California contract HIV annually. The state has one of the highest HIV rates nationwide, with more than 100,000 people living with the virus, according to the California Department of Public Health Office of AIDS (Brambila, Desert Sun, 5/27).

Roche And Google.org Start Initiative For Early Discovery Of New Diseases
Roche and Google.org recently started a joint project to demonstrate the feasibility of developing a multidisciplinary surveillance, research and response system. This system will enhance the ability to predict and prevent emerging infectious diseases in East Africa. Roche has donated a Genome Sequencer FLX system as backbone of this project."We are proud to work with Google.org, and the dedicated research organizations in Kenya to bring this technology to a region of the world where novel viruses frequently emerge. We are confident that access to the 454 Sequencing Systems will improve monitoring of novel infectious diseases and enable faster discovery in case of an outbreak," said Chris McLeod, CEO of 454 Life Sciences, a member of the Roche Group.

Oncolytics Biotech(R) Inc. Announces Publication Of Research On Synergistic Activity Of Reovirus And Chemotherapy In NSCLC

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. (TSX: ONC, NASDAQ: ONCY) ("Oncolytics") reported today that Dr. Shizuko Sei et al. published the results of their work examining reovirus and chemotherapy against human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The paper, entitled "Synergistic Antitumor Activity of Oncolytic Reovirus and Chemotherapeutic Agents in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells" appears online in the July 14, 2009 issue of Molecular Cancer. "This important study demonstrates that reovirus works synergistically in combination with chemotherapy, and in some instances can overcome significant multiple drug resistance in certain cell lines," said Dr. Brad Thompson, President and CEO of Oncolytics. "We are currently using drug combinations against NSCLC and head and neck cancers in two separate U.S. Phase II studies." The investigators examined in vitro combination effects of reovirus alone and in combination with cisplatin, gemcitabine or vinblastine. When reovirus was used alone, it demonstrated significant cytolytic activity in 7 of 9 NSCLC cell lines examined. The combinations demonstrated strong synergistic effects on cell killing. The combination of reovirus and paclitaxel was invariably synergistic in all cell lines tested, regardless of their level of sensitivity to either agent. The investigators concluded that the oncolytic activity of reovirus can be potentiated by taxanes and other chemotherapeutic agents, and that the reovirus-taxane combination most effectively achieves synergy through accelerated apoptosis triggered by prolonged mitotic arrest. About Oncolytics Biotech Inc. Oncolytics is a Calgary-based biotechnology company focused on the development of oncolytic viruses as potential cancer therapeutics. Oncolytics" clinical program includes a variety of Phase I/II and Phase II human trials using REOLYSIN(R), its proprietary formulation of the human reovirus, alone and in combination with radiation or chemotherapy.
