Risk Of Heart Failure Doubled By Obesity And Diabetes -- Patients With Both Conditions 'Very Difficult' To Treat
The twin epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes will continue to fuel an explosion in heart failure, already the world"s most prevalent chronic cardiovascular disease, according to John McMurray, professor of cardiology at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, and President of the Heart Failure Association. He reported that around one-third of patients with heart failure have evidence of diabetes, and for them the outlook is very serious. For doctors, he added, effective treatment is "very difficult".

Abbott And AstraZeneca Extend Relationship To Include Co-promotion Of TRILIPIX(R) (fenofibric Acid)
Abbott and AstraZeneca announced today that they have entered into an agreement for AstraZeneca to co-promote Abbott"s TRILIPIX® (fenofibric acid), a medication for use alone or in combination with a statin to treat certain lipid disorders. Under the terms of the agreement, AstraZeneca will obtain the non-exclusive right to co-promote TRILIPIX alongside Abbott in the United States, excluding Puerto Rico. Specific financial terms were not disclosed.

NICE Welcomes Office For Life Sciences New Blueprint To Support Innovative Drugs

NICE today welcomed the Office for Life Sciences new Blueprint to support the life sciences industry, which will also improve patient access to innovative new drugs. Welcoming the Blueprint launch, Andrew Dillon Chief Executive of NICE said: "Securing a successful future for the life sciences industries is important for patients and the UK economy.The Innovation Pass is an opportunity for data to be gathered on potentially important new treatments. NICE has been involved in discussions about the Innovation Pass, and we are looking forward to continuing to play a key role in developing the pass." Mr Dillon continued: "NICE is committed to engaging constructively with the pharmaceutical industry and we are extending the access that companies have to us, as we appraise their products. Later this year, we will begin asking pharmaceutical and other life sciences companies, whose products we are evaluating, to make technical staff available to engage with our advisory Appraisal Committees. They will be able to respond to requests from committee chairs to clarify the data they have submitted and to point out any error of fact in the presentation of their data. We believe that this will give companies more confidence in the way NICE handles the evaluation of their products." NICE
