Exploring Mobility For Disabled Children
If your child needs to use a wheelchair, whether temporarily following illness or surgery or for longer-term disability, it is important they feel confident to move about safely. At this year"s national Mobility Roadshow that takes place at Kemble Airfield near Cirencester on 4, 5 and 6 June the Association of Wheelchair Children will be holding wheelchair skills workshops for children. In half hour sessions they will teach practical skills - ascending and descending kerbs, slopes, negotiating roads, moving backwards and forwards - empowering them with the ability to assess risk and to move safely and confidently about their homes and neighbourhoods. These sessions are equally useful for parents and carers.

USAID Programs Used Biblical Lessons To Teach Abstinence In Africa, Audit Finds
The U.S. Agency for International Development funded programs that used biblical lessons to promote sexual abstinence in Africa, despite a prohibition on the use of taxpayer funds to support "inherently religious activities," according to a recent audit by the agency"s inspector general, the Washington Post reports.The audit focused on projects initiated from 2006 to 2007 during the administration of President George W. Bush. According to the audit, the use of Christian stories in HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Africa could be seen as showing a "USAID-funded preference for Christianity." The audit also found that officials in one faith-based abstinence program in Africa urged youth to memorize and recite a passage from the Bible"s book of Psalms. Participants were then instructed to recite the passage"s "key concept": "God has a plan for sex and this plan will help you and protect you from harm."USAID challenged the findings in a written response that said its African programs" main goals are secular in nature. It acknowledged that some of its abstinence programs included "religiously infused materials" but said that the materials showed no preference for Christian groups.According to the Post, the issue has been complicated by legal ambiguities over whether the separation of church and state applies to programs for promoting U.S. foreign policy abroad. The inspector general"s report said the Department of Justice is considering a request from USAID to determine the legality of its practices (Lynch, Washington Post, 7/23).

Military Doctor Pay Award Likely To Worsen Recruitment And Retention Crisis, Says British Medical Association

The Armed Forces Pay Review Body has announced that military doctors and dentists will receive a 1.5% pay rise this year, significantly lower than the 2.8% awarded to other armed forces personnel. There are serious manpower problems in the Defence Medical Services. The BMA is concerned that the announcement will have an adverse effect on the recruitment and retention of armed forces doctors. Dr Brendan McKeating, Chair of the BMA"s Armed Forces Committee said: "Armed forces doctors will be disappointed by this announcement. Military doctors typically earn less than their NHS counterparts. The BMA has been calling for doctors to be rewarded for their military service rather than penalised. The pay award does nothing to address this injustice. "Under manning is a serious problem in specialties that are critical to defence medicine. The Ministry of Defence"s own figures show that we need to double the number of psychiatrists and anaesthetists. There are also huge shortfalls in the number of doctors needed in emergency medicine and general surgery. These specialties are essential to the treatment of military personnel and this problem must be taken seriously. "The pay award is significantly lower than that received by other military personnel. Rather than encourage recruitment and retention it is likely to make it worse. "Our capacity to provide high quality care to our armed forces is under threat if the MOD does not take the retention of armed forces doctors seriously. We must ensure people who risk their lives for our country have access to high quality healthcare." British Medical Association
