Prostate-Specific Antigen: To Test Or Not To Test, From Harvard Men's Health Watch
One of the most controversial issues in men"s health is whether men should routinely have a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to screen for prostate cancer. Some experts argue that PSA testing saves lives by helping detect this common form of cancer early. Others say it triggers unnecessary treatment that disrupts many more lives than it saves. The results of two studies released this spring focused the debate, but scientists are still a long way from concluding the discussion, reports the July 2009 issue of Harvard Men"s Health Watch.

Washington, D.C., Church Addresses HIV Stigma, Teaches Safe Sex To Black, Gay Congregation
The Washington Post on Sunday featured Washington D.C.,-based Inner Light Ministries, a 16-year-old black community church with about 100 members, where many go "to share their experience of being black and gay, living and loving in a city where HIV and AIDS lurk in epidemic proportions. ò€¦" Some members of the congregation, as well as four of its leaders including Bishop Rainey Cheeks are HIV-positive. Cheeks teaches safe sex as a part of his sermons and the church provides condoms to its members. The article also discusses the stigma associated with HIV among gay black men. "Some men are reluctant to reveal their health status to possible partners for fear of being rejected," according to the Post. "That attitude, Cheeks said, is part of why gay black men in the District are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. And why he has to keep preaching the message of safe sex," the article states (Fears, 7/26).

Global Confirmed Swine Flu Cases Nears 10,000

According to WHO (World Health Organization), the total number of confirmed swine flu A(H1N1) cases of human infections stands at 9,830, including 79 deaths. The numbers of confirmed cases are rising by approximately 1,000 per day, says WHO. Japan has seen confirmed cases rise sharply over the last few days. Several medical charities say that wealthy countries have taken up such a high proportion of vaccine orders that there is not much left for the rest of the world over the medium term. The A(H1N12) influenza virus strain (swine flu) is much less virulent than previously thought. It is no more likely to lead to serious complications or death than ordinary seasonal human influenza, say experts. However, WHO says it is still too early to predict which way this outbreak will go. Influenza viruses may mutate if they come into contact with other flu viruses. If a person who is already ill with flu gets infected by the swine flu virus as well, that virus would have the opportunity to exchange genetic material with the virus present in the sick person - this could result in a mutation. Fortunately, the majority of mutated viruses are nowhere near as virulent as the Avian Flu Virus (H5N1).
