Pfizer's Oral JAK-3 Inhibitor Demonstrates Statistically Significant Response For Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, New Phase 2 Studies Show
Pfizer announced today that data from two new mid-stage clinical studies of the company"s oral JAK-3 inhibitor, CP-690,550, showed statistically significant response versus placebo for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Data from these two Phase 2 trials and one ongoing open-label safety study are being presented this week at the 10th Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). These results confirm findings from two previously reported Phase 2 studies in RA and have been used to support dose selection for Phase 3.

CytoDyn Completes Safety Testing Of Cytolin(R): Benchmark For Improved Treatment Of HIV/AIDS
CytoDyn, Inc. (Pink Sheets:CYDY) has completed safety testing of its current inventory of Cytolin®, the Company"s immune-system modulator for managing HIV disease and the public health crisis afflicting communities where the infection is spreading due to unprotected sex and the other risk factors for AIDS. Tests for specific adventitious agents and other quality parameters following purification were performed by the manufacturing facility, Vista Biologicals Corporation of Carlsbad, California. The other safety tests, including in vivo general safety using two animal species, were performed by WuXi AppTec, a fully integrated pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical-device company with facilities in St. Paul, Minnesota. WuXi AppTec provides R&D services to the biotechnology industry. Since the product is intended for use in a clinical trial, the tests conducted were those required for each new batch of a biologic agent manufactured for use in human research. The Company believes that the test results satisfy the current safety standards for the manufacturing of drugs belonging to the class of biologics. The results are summarized in the table below.

Abortion Issue Could Derail Health Reform

Nineteen Democrats have written House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promising not to vote for a health bill that includes funding for abortion, igniting a debate that has the potential to derail a health care overhaul, NPR reports. "I take a view that there"s almost anything [that can be compromised] in public affairs except probably the issue of abortion," said Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), one of the leading Republicans seeking a bipartisan health bill." "On Monday, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, the only one of five congressional committees overseeing the health effort that is actually drafting its bill, debated a half dozen abortion-related amendments. It defeated most on identical 12-11 votes, including one that would have barred people who get government insurance subsidies from buying private insurance plans that include abortion coverage. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) said the principle is the same as the one that currently bans funding for abortion in the Medicaid program for the poor. "You are taking federal tax dollars and using them to provide abortion services," he said." "The committee"s debate was relatively brief, but the abortion issue hangs over the health overhaul effort like a dark, menacing cloud. Abortion foes, like Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee, say President Obama and congressional leaders plan to use the health care effort to dramatically increase the availability of abortion services." Others say most insurance plans cover abortion, contraception and women"s reproductive health and that such coverage will ensure women have the same access to care as men (Rovner, 7/14).
